Kuchisake-Onna

School art assignment: create a character & prop design based on a folk tale. I made this design based on the modern day urban legend of Kuchisake-Onna, a malicious spirit who asks you if you think she's beautiful (with her lower face covered), only to reveal her mutilated face when you answer to ask you again. Long story short, tomfoolery happens. She's usually portrayed in a more modern fashion, with a medical face mask and trenchcoat. In my design I instead took inspiration from the Edo period; instead of a face mask she covers her face with a fan, and instead of the trenchcoat she wears a kimono tied in the front, with the kimono being tied with the right side over the left - the fashion of the deceased.
